Four Weeks Before

1. Contact schools in the area.
2. Fill out IRS change of address form, to obtain this form call the IRS.
3. Make arrangements with a moving company or reserve a rental truck.
4. Sort your belongings and decide what you don't want to move
5. Hold a garage sale.
6. Begin packing, unless packing is handled exclusively by movers.
7. Obtain records you will take with you: medical, dental, school.
8. Start using up food items, so that there is less left to pack and possibly spoil.

Two Weeks Before

1. Arrange for transfer of bank and other financial accounts. Collect valuables from safe-deposit box.
2. Clean your rugs and clothing and have them wrapped for moving.
3. Check with your insurance agent to ensure you'll be covered through your homeowner's or renter's policy during the move.
4. Send change of address announcements out.
5. Arrange for transfer of prescriptions.
6. Cancel newspaper subscriptions and other delivery services as needed.
7. Cancel cable TV service, telephone and garbage collection.
8. Make arrangements for moving/boarding pets.
9. Set up utility services for your new address.

One Week Before

1. Schedule final utility meter readings for day of closing, including gas, electricity, and water.
2. Go to the post office and arrange for your mail to be forwarded to the new address.
3. Talk to the title officer, your lawyer, and your agent to verify that all necessary paperwork will be ready for your closing.
4. Gather all the documents you are expected to bring to the closing meeting, such as: paid property tax receipts, property surveys, copies of your mortgage, any other liens on the property, and certified funds.

After Arriving at Your New Home

1. Renew your driver's license, auto registration and tags.
2. Locate the hospitals, police stations, veterinarian and fire stations near your home.
3. Make sure all your friends, family, and business associates have your new home address.
4. Record the phone numbers of your new utility companies, insurance agents, and other organizations in your new location.
